Today we began harvesting the plums. I had a very willing helper in Rex, as plum jam is his absolute favourite. We missed most of the plums last January as we were away the week they ripened and the parrots cleaned most of them up. There is a serious amount of fruit this year, withContinue reading “Plum glut”
Glorious weather has welcomed in the new year at Redleaf. We have been enjoying the swimming hole and barbequing by the creek. Pepper did indeed give birth to nine lovely babies six days after Ginger, so we have 19 piglets suckling and grazing about the place. The sows cant stand still for long without beingContinue reading “Summer!”
Our Saddleback sow Ginger (who has some Duroc thrown in her heritage somewhere – hence the ginger…) had her second litter of piglets yesterday morning. Ten lovely healthy little piggies. They are adorable. Most have nice saddle markings, including 2 ginger ones with saddles, and the same as her first litter there is one leopardContinue reading “Saddleback piglets x 10”
It was a glorious highlands day today and we marked our first 9 young dorper lambs, and weaned some of the larger ones. They are big strong lambs, ready to eat. We butchered 2 last week for ourselves which dressed at 29 and 32 kg, and are amazingly delicious. So if you like your meatContinue reading “Fat lambs are ready”
With our abundance of beautiful pasture our lambs are getting fatter by the day… although we are hard pressed to find them with the sheer volume of feed available! So, we have some new stock – 40 new dorper ewes and another Sam the Ram – this one with a white face. He comes withContinue reading “Lambs”
One of my favourite morning songs is that of the Grey Shrike Thrush – such a clear crisp voice – they always sound so happy. I was thrilled to discover that they are nesting in an old copper pot on the electrical box!
We have grass! Thanks to recent rains and some glorious days everything is growing lush and green… including the weeds. I spent the afternoon digging out thistles with my little helper Chilli. It looked like only a few in the paddock but once we got going we soon filled the trailer – got most ofContinue reading “Lush Spring”
We have some lambs that are getting to a good size and will be ready in the next 6 weeks. Pepper and Ginger have been running with Sam-the-Ham and are hopefully on the way to producing the next litter of piglets, due around mid November. Poppy is growing well and should be ready to meetContinue reading “Redleaf Farm”
